History of Matugama Divisional Secretariat

From the ancient there has been a strong and powerful administrative hierarchy in Sri Lanka including this divisional area. After 1815, as British  coloney Sri Lanka was divided in to 5 provinces & their in to 9 provinces. The administrative head of the province called government agent. This area was belonged to Pas Yodun Koralaya and the last administrative officer, Muhandiram was D.H Munasinghe from Katugahahena & Wolter Gunathilake from Weththewa. Samel Munasinghe was the last Vidane.
With the time passes, In 1943 the first Divisional Revenue officer was selected by a competitive exzam, Mr. A.A Widana Pathirana for Kaluthara Distict. The officer was conducted in Weththewa. In 1958 Mr. B.C Chandradasa one of the 5 DRO belonged to Kaluthra district established the office in the Mathugama town itself.
In 1963 as the field level administrative officers or the post of Gammuledeni was established. As in 1973 the Addiroud government agent post was introduced, in 1977 the first A G A was Mr. R.M.B Rathnayake. In 1990 the post was changed to divisional secretery & the first DS was Mr K. Lionel Perera.
In 2014 the divisional secretariat was brought to Aluthgama- Mathugama road in the time of divisional secretary  Mrs. Sujani Silva. Precently Mrs. Kariyawasam is the D.S & division is going forward for a peaceful & developed.
